The Apple iPhone redefined a mobile device, bringing HTML, e-mail, and apps to smartphones. But after 18 months, the iPhone faces its first real competitors. Apple’s issues with its 2.x software update, developer complaints over its highly controlled environment, and so-so enterprise support all give the competition an opening.
All the mobile 2.0 competitors support 3G networks, touch interfaces, accelerometers, and location detection services.
The verdict: Although the Google Android platform falls a a bit short, the BlackBerry Storm is right on Apple’s heels.

Ascent to video – space shuttle ‘Discovery’.

Following a picture perfect launch from the Kennedy Space Center Monday evening, space shuttle Discovery is racing toward the International Space Station for its planned rendezvous and docking at 5:13 p.m. EDT on Tuesday. A few hours after liftoff, Mission Control in Houston told Discovery’s astronauts that the first look at ascent imagery showed no debris items of concern. The imagery review process will continue over the next several days and will be assessed by the Mission Management Team.

Now we have the talking iPod Shuffle that Apple announced Wednesday. It is closer to a tie clasp and holds roughly 1,000 songs.
Play, pause and volume controls are located in a small remote on the right earbud cord.

U.S. astronaut Michael Fincke and Russian cosmonaut Yury Lonchakov, on board of the International Space Station (ISS), have successfully completed a spacewalk ahead of schedule, Russian Mission Control said on Wednesday. The spacewalk was conducted on Tuesday to finish work started on December 23. Read more

The 2008 Nobel Prize laureates were named in Stockholm and Oslo on October 6-13. During the week, six prizes were awarded.
The prizes and their winners are:
_ Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine to French researchers Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier for their discovery of human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, in 1983. They shared the award with Germany’s Harald zur Hausen, who was honored for finding human papilloma viruses that cause cervical cancer, the second most common cancer among women.
_ Nobel Prize in physics to Japan’s Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide and American Yoichiro Nambu for theoretical advances that help explain the behavior of the smallest particles of matter.
_ Nobel Prize in chemistry to Osamu Shimomura, a Japanese citizen who works in the United States, and Americans Martin Chalfie and Roger Tsien for discovering and developing green fluorescent protein, or GFP, that has helped researchers watch the tiniest details of life within cells and living creatures.
Nobel Prize in literature to France’s Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio for works characterized by “poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy” and focused on the environment, especially the desert.
_ Nobel Peace Prize to Former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari for his efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts.
_ The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences to American Paul Krugman for his analysis of how economies of scale affects trade patterns and where economic activity takes place.
